OCS - Organic Content Standard is applied to any products that do not contain 5-100% of organic materials. This standard aims to identify the presence and amount of organic materials in finished products. Besides, OCS helps to track the journey of raw materials from the input to finished products. This process is certified by the third party.
This standard has two logos based on components:
OCS 100 relies on third-party verification to determine whether final products contain exactly the amount of incremental organic raw material.
OCS allows independent, transparent, consistent and comprehensive evaluation and inspection of organic material claims on products. OCS 100 includes processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading and distribution of products that contain at least 95% “organic” material. It can be used as a “business to business” tool to provide companies with a proof that ensure that they are selling high-quality products and receiving exactly what they paid.
OCS does not mention the use of chemicals, any social or environmental aspects of production but the integrity of organic materials. OCS uses a series of CCS custody requirements.
Organic Content Standard 2.0 was established on 1st January, 2016 after the consideration of many stakeholders.
OCS accomplishes its objectives by verifying the presence and the number of organic material in a final product.
It provides a robust chain of custody systems from the source of organic material to final product through certification. It allows independent, transparent, consistent and comprehensive evaluation and inspection of organic material claims regarding the content of organic materials on products. As a "business to business" tool, OCS can be used to ensure that products that the company purchased contain organic materials.
The standard does not include raw material certification which is verified independently with manufacturing certification. It also does not address inputs like chemicals, environmental aspects in processing such as the use of energy or water, social issues, safety problems, and law compliances.
OCS applicable cases :
OCS applicable cases embrace processors, manufacturers, brands and retailers, traders, certification organizations and organizations that support organic raw material initiatives.
OCS is a voluntary standard that does not aim to replace law requirements or regulations of any nation. The responsibility of each action is to express compliance with all applicable laws and regulations related to marketing, labor, and business. If there are any conflict between local regulations and OCS’s requirements, the certification body will contact to TE to find the best practical method. When there is a standard misunderstanding, the first point of contact will be OCS Certification Organization, or Textile Exchange if further clarification is needed.
