Palm oil is an extremely important commodity in the food industry as well as non-food industry. Over the last few decades, the uncontrolled expansion of palm oil’s production and cultivation has caused land degradation and water depletion that has had a severe impact on the environment. Therefore, a Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established.
Found in 2004, RSPO has developed a set of environmental and social criteria that companies must adhere to produce certified palm oil (CSPO - certified sustainable palm oil). If they are applied properly, these criteria can minimize negative effects such as deforestation. There has been a lot of criticism surrounding the use of palm oil in the industry. Following the RSPO framework means you are committed to working closely with intermediary providers in an attempt to reduce the impacts on the environment created by palm oil plantations.
The RSPO Supply Chain Certification System is an independent supply chain guardianship aiming to prove that palm oil is sustainably and ethically acquired from certified growers. The supply chain includes all stages from refining, manufacturing, processing, transporting and distributing palm oil. the RSPO Supply Chain certification makes it quicker to track the traceability of the product, from that demonstrating that the sustainability of palm oil meets the expectations of customers and end-consumers.
Nowadays, 50 million tons of palm oil are produced annually. This output is equivalent to more than 30% of the world's vegetable oil. Palm oil can be found in a wide range of products such as bread, candies, shampoo, cosmetics and so on.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, this unique vegetable oil is found in 40-50% of Australian household products.
The origin of palm oil is likely to affect the sustainability of the ecosystems, economic development and the health of indigenous communities. The unsustainable utilization of palm oil is becoming increasingly pervasive which can damage the brand reputation and affect the sustainable development of businesses in the supply chain across the globe. The palm oil production areas have expanded globally which is around 43% from 1990. As a result, the related food and non-food companies have to beat the brunt of proving that palm oil used in their products has clear and sustainable sources.
