Pre–Audit Better Work – Social accountability in garment sector

Better Work Vietnam (BWV) works with workers , business owners and governments to improve working conditions and promote competitiveness in the Vietnamese apparel industry.

CHALLENGES IN BUSINESS

  • The garment industry in Vietnam has grown tremendously over the last few decades.It is estimated that the industry generates an export value of more than $ 28 billion in 2015 and increases over the years.
  • The garment industry in our country now produces over 2,5 million workers annually. More than 80% of the garment workers are mainly women. Most of these workers are young and come from rural areas. This is an important factor for poverty reduction and socio-economic development in Vietnam.
  • According to statistics in Vietnam, there are about 6,000 textile and garment factories in the country, with about 70% of garment production available.Most garment companies follow the CMT model (cutting, sewing and finishing). There are about 800 factories operating directly for export, mainly for brands and retailers in North America, Europe and Japan.

INTRODUCTION TO BETTER WORK

Better Work, a joint initiative of   ILO   and   International Finance Corporation (IFC) , a member of   World Bank,   started operations in 2009 aiming to improve working conditions and improve competitiveness in global garment supply chains. Working with more than 50 international brands, the program establishes partnerships with customers in the supply chain, as well as enhances plant capacity through pre-audit and pre-audit. Currently the program is active in seven countries: Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Jordan, Haiti and Nicaragua.

Since 2009, Better Work Vietnam (BWV) has partnered with employees, business owners and the government   to improve working conditions and promote competitiveness in the garment industry in Vietnam

  • The program has nearly 50 employees working to provide assessment, counseling and pre-audit services.The program also collaborates closely with the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA), as a social dialogue model adopted by the National Labor Code in 2013.
  • Better Work started operations in Vietnam in 2009 and currently supports more than 400 export-oriented factories with more than half a million workers - about 21% of the workforce in the industry, concentrated mainly in the region. Ho Chi Minh City.So far, the program has conducted thousands of assessments and counseling sessions to help factories identify and improve working conditions and labor 
  • Better Work Vietnam also works with relevant agencies within the Government, the Trade Union and the Employer's Organization to build the capacity of the units to support compliance and improvements. Develop evidence-based, more effective labor market policies.

Better Work strives to better the working conditions of workers in the garment industry. Specifically:

  • Better Work helps prevent abuse probationary contract and thelabor contract makes no protective workers leaving the work is not stable.
  • Improved working conditions: working time, welfare, social insurance,maternity, extra hours, bonus and so on.
  • Positive impact on the educational opportunity ofchildren: Better work ensures better working conditions for employees, making them more likely to pay for their children's tuition.

In addition to the benefits to employees, in the long run, the business also receives benefits. Participating in Better Work not only improves better working conditions but also earns higher profits. According to the research, factories that provide better working conditions for employees will have a profit margin higher than their competitors. This suggests a link between better working conditions and higher returns over time.
