Global Organic Fabric Standard
GOST is a globally voluntary and stringent standard for the whole processing after harvests (including yarn spinning, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing). Garments and textiles were made from organic fibers (such as organic cotton and organic wool) and standards including environmental and social ones.
The main rule embraces a ban on using genetically modified organisms (GMO), highly hazardous chemicals (for example azo and formaldehyde dyes), and child labour while some requirements of social compliance management system and waste treatment practice are very stringent. There are more than 3,800 units certified GOTS in 2015 in 68 countries. The number of labors reported in 3419 GOST of certified units exceeds 1.050.000 people.
GOST was developed by organizations that specialize in doing research and setting the leading international requirements, they are American Organic Trade Association, Japanese Organic Cotton Association, International Association of German Textiles Industry, and British Land Association, there is an international working group to determine globally certified requirements with a view to ensuring that textile items are not harmful to the environment. GOST is recognized worldwide as a top processing standard for textile items made from organic yarn.
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) officially approved of GOST selling US labeled organic textiles through its Policy Memorandum in 2011.
GOST ensures that textile items do not affect the environment and social responsibilities of enterprises through labelling, then improve consumers’ reliability.
GOTS has proved its feasibility in reality since it was introduced in 2006. Supported by the growth of organic yarn consumption, it was publicly and allowed to manufacture, provide organic textile with an approved certificate for all big markets because of considerable demands for unified criteria from industry and retail sector.
Thanks to the appearance of logo and labelling system, GOST has appeared not only on the corners of textile stores but also at large retail stores and brand agencies. This is a positive indication of consumer’s awareness and widespread recognition of the defintion “reliable quality assurance”.
