FSSC 22000 is a certification program that inherits a lot from ISO 22000 and has a broader list of standards that are met by businesses.
FSSC 22000 standard is considered to be reliable, based on ISO standards and plans for inspection and international certification of food safety management systems in the food supply chain.
FSSC 22000 uses current standards of ISO 22000, ISO 22003 as well as technical industry specifications of the "Prerequisite Program" (PPU) which have been developed based on the community train with interested organizations. Manufacturers that already certified to ISO 22000 can gain FSSC 22000 which is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) provided that the requirements of the PPU industry specifications and additional program requirements will be met.
ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 Certification
The background of ISO 22000 is wider than the FSSC 22000 standard. This is because the requirements of ISO 22000 are less rigid for certification bodies and requirements for the enterprise itself, for infrastructure, floor and document maintenance.
The requirement for the competent authority which will implement certification in compliance with FSSC 22000 will be more rigid: must be a corresponding scope of accreditation and auditors must be accredited. Moreover, there are very few auditors and certification organizations recognized by GFSI today.
For the FSSC 22000 certification program, procedures and documents are similar to those of ISO 22000. However, there is also a traceability procedure and other documents depending on the expenditure. Production details (e.g. accident procedures during product transport, etc.)
The certification procedure is no different. However, the requirements of the FSSC 22000 program are broader and more rigid, so certification under this program is a very long, laborious, and costly process.
