GRS Pre-audit - Global Recycle Standard for textile industry

GRS stands for Global Recycle Standard developed in 2008 by CONTROL UNION (CU) and currently managed by Textile Exchange, a global non-profit organization with the aim of promoting conversion of fibre and textile industry.

In 2012, Textile Exchange revised standards with a view to matching textile industry's goals.  International Working Group of certification bodies was developed to reach the revision of standards. Members of IWG are certification experts of Union Union, ICEA, IMO, Intertek and SCS Global Services. A broader group of stakeholders embraces retailers, brands, vendors and other members who assessed standards to ensure that they are useful and relevant tools for industry.

The set of standard consists of Organic Content Standard and Responsibility Reduction Standard. This kind of standard is designed to ensure the chain of custody in prioritized documents and provide labelled tools for proclamation of finak products.

What is GRS?

GRS mentioned the verification of input materials, chains of custody, environmental principles, social requirements and issues concerning labeling for textile products made from recycled materials. It is a complete standard of content of recycled materials tightly balanced for industry and final consumers.

GRS uses ISO 14021 definition in terms of Recycle Content with explanations based on instructions of Federal Commerce Commission of the United States; its intention is to comply with strict and widely recognized definitions.

The appearance of standard aims at following and verifying the content of recycled material in final products.  GRS also ensures requirements of stringent production.

GRS is a set of internationally voluntary standard, full with requirements of third party's certification concerning recycle, chain of custody, social reality, environment and chemical restriction.

GRS satisfies demands of companies that are finding ways to verify the recycled content of products (both finished and intermediate products), social and environmental activities, chemicals in production.

Who can apply GRS?

GRS can be applicable to all companies that are responsible for manufacturing and selling GRS products.  More specifically, these activities include process, manufacture, packaging, labeling, business and distribution of products made from at least 20% recycled materials.  Document gathering is not required to be certified GRS but must announce that they met a mass of requirements in accordance with this standard's targets and agree to be inspected randomly by Certification and Inspection Body.

In case the processing lessee produces wholly or partially final products, stakeholders must then comply with GRS.

Material gathering and handling do not require GRS certificate but must meet requirements in accordance with this standard and allow Certification and Inspection Body to inspect randomly.  Certified products are random and unlimited options. In case an organization outsources partially or wholly final product production, external corporations must also comply with GRS.

GRS's goals:

  • Fit definitions in mutiple applications.
  • Supervise recycled input materials.
  • Provide customers (both brands and consumers) with a tool to make wise decisions.
  • Reduce negative impacts on humans and the environment.
  • Ensure that materials in final products are actually recycled and treated more sustainably.
  • Stimulate innovation in issues of quality in use of recycled materials. GRS uses ISO 14021 definition in terms of Recycle Content with explanations based on instructions of Federal Commerce Commission of the United States; its intention is to comply with strict and widely recognized definitions.
